ANSYS Advantage

Magnetic Appeal

Author: Charilaos Kokkinos, FEAC Engineering
Published in: ANSYS Advantage – Excellence in Engineering Simulation, Volume VIII, Issue 2, 2014, pp. 16–19
Published by: ANSYS, Inc.
Type: Engineering Feature Article

The article presents the application of coupled electromagnetic, thermal and structural simulation to the design and optimization of CERN's 11 T superconducting accelerator magnet. The integrated multiphysics approach enabled electromagnetic loads to be transferred directly to structural and thermal analyses and supported systematic design-space exploration and optimization.

The resulting design reduced material requirements and manufacturing lead time by five months while maintaining the required structural rigidity. The integrated ANSYS Workbench methodology also reduced the design optimization process by approximately three weeks compared with the previous workflow.

The article was authored by Charilaos Kokkinos under his FEAC Engineering affiliation and builds on engineering work performed during his time at CERN.
